Last week, the teams were entering the qualifying round for the 2023 World Cup, let’s take a look at 2 matches of Spain and the Philippines with Sunwin.
Spain overwhelmingly wins the opening match of the World Cup 2023
The Spanish women’s team excelled with beautiful play and 46 shots, when they defeated Costa Rica 3-0 in the opening match of the 2023 World Cup.
* Score: Del Campo owns 21′, Bonmati 23′, E.Gonzalez 27′
Spain’s dominance on Wellington’s field today is evident in the fundamental indicators. According to the Sunwin reporter present at the field, the European representative held the ball 80% of the time, and on average, he launched a shot every two minutes, while Costa Rica only shot once. Besides, Spain also has 588 passes, achieving a success rate of 86%, while this statistic of Costa Rica is only 142 and 47%.
In the last encounter at the 2015 Women’s World Cup, Spain drew 1-1 with Costa Rica. In the previous seven games, the team won only one, drew two and lost four. Therefore, the performance on Wellington field this afternoon on July 21, Hanoi time showed the amazing progress of coach Jorge Vilda’s teachers and students.
Immediately after the opening hour, Spain rushed to attack, forcing the opponent to retreat very deeply. After a series of failures, they were rewarded with the opening goal in the 21st minute when Costa Rica defender Del Campo counter-kick. The lead advantage helped Spain sublimate, scoring two more goals just six minutes later, thanks to Bonmati and Esther Gonzalez respectively.
34 minutes, the score could be 4-0 if Jennifer Hermoso didn’t miss the penalty kick. This was the third unsuccessful penalty at the 2023 World Cup. Before that, New Zealand’s Percival and Canada’s Christine Sinclair respectively missed a 1-0 win over Norway and a 0-0 draw with Nigeria.

After a 15-minute break between the two halves, Spain still did not give the opponent a chance to get on the ball, but also did not score any more goals. The highlight of the second half only came from the substitution phase.
In the 73rd minute, Sheika Scott of Costa Rica became the youngest player – 16 years and 272 days – to play in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, when he replaced Maria Salas. Four minutes later, Spain launched the reigning Golden Ball Alexia Putellas to replace Salma Paralluelo, marking the striker’s return after more than half a year of injury.
3-0 in favor of Spain is still the strongest result since the beginning of the 2023 World Cup, and helps coach Jorge Vilda’s army lead Group C.

The Philippines actively backed down to wait for the opportunity to counterattack in the match at Forsyth Barr Stadium this afternoon, July 21, Hanoi time. In the 16th minute, a long shot from the home field gave Katrina Guillou the opportunity to trick goalkeeper Gaelle Thalmann and hit the empty net. But the Filipino player was only happy for a moment, before the referee waved the flag to warn Guillou was offside.
Thanks to the possession of multi-racial players and familiarity with the cold weather, and good body shape, the Philippines competes well in hand-to-hand combat. Switzerland looked to a pair of quality strikers Ramona Bachmann – Ana Crnogorcevic in attacks, but it was not until the 43rd minute that the European representative had a clear opportunity.
Coumba Sow was kicked in the leg by Jessika Cowart inside the box, and Switzerland were awarded a penalty after the referee consulted VAR. On the 11m mark, Bachmann easily fooled Olivia McDaniel to open the scoring. This is also the first goal scored in the first half since the start of the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
In the second half, the Philippines tried to attack more, but it was not easy to get on the ball when Switzerland controlled the game well. In the 64th minute, goalkeeper McDaniel saved two consecutive kicks from Crnogorcevic and Sow, but was powerless before Seraina Piubel’s third shot.
The Southeast Asian representative tried to find an equalizer in the last 30 minutes, including compensation time. Even goalkeeper McDaniel stepped up to attack in some set pieces. However, the score 2-0 was maintained until the end of the match.
This result helps Switzerland lead Group A with three points, equal to the host New Zealand, but more than the goal difference (+2 vs. +1). The Philippines is at the bottom of the table, followed by Norway.
