3 Facts about the Poland football team World Cup

The FIFA 2022 World Cup will soon be upon us, and one nation that is going to be competing this year is Poland. Poland has found itself in Group C, along with Argentina, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia. While Argentina will be heavy favorites to qualify in the top spot, many people believe the second spot will be a battle between Poland and Mexico, with Poland just edging it in the betting markets.

If you are excited about the World Cup in Qatar, here are three facts about the Poland football team to whet your appetite further:

1. Robert Lewandowski is the country’s top scorer

If you are a keen football fan, you probably won’t be shocked to learn that Lewandowski is Poland’s top scorer. He has made 131 appearances for the national team, scoring 74 goals. We’re sure he will add to this tally during the 2022 World Cup.

He has spent most of his club career in Germany, spending more than a decade in the Bundesliga, with four seasons at Borussia Dortmund and eight seasons at Bayern Munich. He recently secured a move to Barcelona, which is pretty impressive for a 33-year-old.

He has also won many individual accolades over the years, including the European Golden Shoe and the Ballon d’Or Striker of the Year.

2. Poland made it to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016

Poland registered their best performance to date in the 2016 Euro Finals. In fact, they did not lose a game throughout the tournament.

They beat Ukraine and Northern Ireland during the group stages, winning 1-0 in both games. They also drew 0-0 with Germany. In Round 16, they played Switzerland, the game ended 1-1, yet Poland managed to progress thanks to a 5-4 penalty shootout win.

Unfortunately, their penalty luck ran out during the quarter-final game against Portugal. The match ended 1-1 again, but they lost 5-3 on penalties. Although disappointing, it was a great tournament for the team in red and white.

3. They are Olympic gold medal winners

They may not have won a World Cup yet, but that doesn’t mean that the Poland team has not tasted success. In 1972, they won the men’s football gold medal at the Munich Olympic Games.

They have since added more silverware to their collection. They followed up in the 1976 Montreal Games with a silver medal. More recently, in 1992, they also took the silver in the Olympic Games, which were held in Barcelona.

How far will Poland get in the world cup

We hope that you have learned something new about the Poland national team. While they are not one of the favorites in the competition, they certainly have more than enough talent to get out of the group stages, and who knows what could happen from this point!
